Spices
Spices constitute an important group of agricultural commodities which are virtually indispensable in the culinary habits of Indians. They can be primarily defined as farm products used in various forms viz; fresh, ripe, dried, broken, powdered etc. Spices contribute aroma, taste, flavour, colour and pungency to food, rather than a lone food seasoning factor. Spices may be either bark, buds, flowers, fruits, leaves, rhizomes, roots, seeds, stigmas and styles or the entire plant tops. They are well known as appetizers or preservatives and many of them have rich medicinal properties and are used in pharmaceuticals, perfumery, cosmetic products, religious rituals etc.

Herbs

JUJUBE            Botanical Name: Zizyphus Jujuba
Jujube is a reddish-brown fruit. The tree has a growing height of 15-25'. The leaves are 1-3" long, bright green and glossy. Branches are spiny, slender, gnarled and zigzagged. They tend to drop due to the burden of fruit. Jujube fruit ripens during September and October and is harvested when it turns reddish brown.

Uses: Jujube seeds are used for medicinal purpose. It is used in the form of pastes, tablets and syrups. It is used as a remedy for irritability, insomnia, anxiety, oedema, congestive heart failure, asthma and throat diseases.

Jujube oil extracted from ripe Jujube seeds is also used for medicinal purposes.


SENNA LEAVES            Botanical Name: Cassia angustifolia
Senna is a small shrub about 2 feet high. The stem is erect, smooth and pale green, with long spreading branches. The leaves has a peculiar odour and mucilaginous, sweetish taste. India is one among the few countries where Senna is abundantly cultivated.

Uses: Senna leaves are used for medicinal purposes. It contains rhein, aloe-emedin, naempferol, isormamenetin, both free and as glycosides together with myricle alcohol.

Senna is a very laxative herb which is used in combination with other herbs. This is a used as remedy for intestinal worms, relieves malarial-type fevers and chills, for biliosness. It is also be used as mouth wash for halitosis.
